Tenille Lindeque

Tenille began dancing as a young girl, first ballet, then modern and jazz dance. Tenille began teaching aerobics classes for her God Mother, Briony Lidstone, at the age of 16 when Briony was unable to teach as a result of an injury. Her classes were well received and Tenille became a permanent assistant teacher, teaching for the Sedgefield Gym Cats between 1997 and 1999.

In 2000 she reluctantly left her family behind and moved from Sedgefield to Cape Town to study with the ETA and obtain her aerobic instructors and personal trainers diplomas. During her training with the ETA, she taught aerobics to a group of cardiac rehab patients at UCT at 6:30am!

Tenille's first exposure to belly dancing happened in the year 2000 when her partner, Trygve, introduced her to Dawn Goldberg who then ran belly dance classes from her home in Muizenberg. She was instantly captivated by the sensual rhythms and natural movements of the dance. Tenille was particularly impressed with the fact that the women in the classes were real women, some skinny, some voluptuous, but all beautiful in their own way. Having spent her life trying to achieve an unrealistic thin ideal, Tenille was thrilled to discover that she could look and feel beautiful, just the way she was.

While teaching at Dakini, Tenille also attended belly dance classes with Natasha Wells, of The Hip Circle, and was inspired by her graceful movements and glamorous stage presence. Tenille and Natasha have since performed together, and remain close friends and colleagues.

Trygve and his mom encouraged Tenille to start her own studio and in 2003, she founded The Feminine Divine. Her initial intention was to teach exercise classes, but slowly but surely, grapevines were replaced with shimmies, and squats with undulations… And so Tenille began teaching belly dance classes to a handful of curious women, many of whom remain close friends and are now professional dancers.

The Feminine Divine has since been featured on Top Billing (2004) and Spirit Sundae (2005) and Tenille now employs 3 assistant teachers, each one of them embodying a special Feminine Divine quality.

In June 2005, Tenille attended the Ahalan Wah Sa Halan Belly Dance festival in Egypt, where she participated in workshops with both Egyptian teachers and dancers from around the globe. She will return to Egypt in June 2007, to study with the veteran's of Belly Dance, Mahmoud Redda and Farida Fahmy.

Tenille is a board member of the Belly Dance Association of South Africa and her studio is the first to offer the BDASA grade syllabus in the Western Cape.

Tenille wishes to share her passion for all things feminine and beautiful through her classes and performances and it is her dream is to help return belly dancing to its respected and sacred origins.
