Khazna Khalil

Inspired at a young age by Michael and Janet Jackson and her favorite movie Flashdance, her mother enrolled her in dance at the age of four.  After which she promptly used her grandparent’s living room as a regular dance space.  Khazna has studied various forms of dance styles through out her life including ballet, jazz, modern, tap, hip-hop and eventually Raks Sharki.  When her Lebanese roots lead her back to the dance of her heritage land, she turned in her toes shoes for a blingy hip scarf, and rediscovered her life’s passion.

Khazna holds a Performing Arts degree from Lansing Community College- it was at the end of her studies there that she discovered the Egyptian Oriental dance (belly dancing).  She studied extensively with Yasmina Amel of Michigan and became a member of the Habibi Dancers before hitting the nightclub stages of Detroit.  She moved to Chicago in search of more dance opportunities and found it; making her living as a professional Oriental dancer.

She has performed at Souk, Layalina, Pasha, Sahara, Prestige, Kan Zeman, Juliana’s, The NBC Tower, and The Museum of Natural History of Chicago, and Hookah at Purdue University to name a few.  As well as being the resident dancer for two years (2003-05) at The Arkadash Café (Chicago’s exclusive Turkish nightclub).

She enjoys collaborating with other artists whenever the opportunity arises, working with Calliope of Michigan (rock band) for the Aids Network Benefit and Funkadesi of Chicago (world beat) on several occasions, and groups of other dancers as well.  Khazna has performed in renaissance festivals in Michigan and Indiana both with the Habibi Dancers and as a solo act.

Her teachers and studies include Egyptian Raks Sharki with Sadiya of Chicago, Cassandra of Minnesota, Suhalia Salimpour of California, Adam Basma of L.A., and (Turkish style Karshlema) with Artemis of Maryland.

In November Khazna attended the 2nd dance seminar in Egypt and studied with Farida Fahmy, Mohomad Reda, and Farouk Moustfa.

Khazna is a full time dancer, performing weekly in the nightclubs and restaurants of Chicago.  Currently at: Sigara Hookah Lounge and Kan Zeman.   She also gives lessons in Chicago at the Rast Ballet studio, Lake Forrest Dance Academy, and Danza Viva in Oak Park.  She also teaches young children creative movement, ballet and Oriental dance.

*Raks Sharki, Egyptian Oriental Dance and belly dance are used interchangeably in the article.
