 CARLA VAN WYK

Carla was born in Cape Town into a musical family (her father is a Professor of Music and her mother was an opera singer), thus it followed that her musical career would begin at an early age. Carla started violin lessons at age four and ballet at age six.

On moving to Johannesburg, she continued with her music and decided to try modern and tap dance. This soon became a new passion alongside music. Carla attended the Art, Ballet and Music School in her final schooling years, specializing in music. Her studies in music continued when she enrolled at Wits University and graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Music degree, as well as the equivalent of an honors degree.

Over the next ten years, Carla taught and performed extensively as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician, traveling overseas, attending master classes with Pinches Zuckerman, Sylvia Rosenberg and the Tokyo String Quartet. She also organized orchestral tours to Botswana and Bophuthatswana, and was manager and second violinist for the Johannesburg-based string quartet “Quattro Archi”.

Carla continued experimenting with various dance forms over this time, trying Flamenco, Ballet, Ballroom and Latin American dance, and finally, Middle Eastern Dance.

She began her journey into Middle Eastern dance studying under Dawn Goldberg, and later traveled to the USA where she worked and studied for a year.

She had the privilege of attending classes over the yearly period with Alyne Hazard, Hala and Fat Chance Belly Dance.

Her training was diverse, varying from Tribal style and American Cabaret to Egyptian Folkloric and Oriental Dance

Carla performed at many festivals during her stay in America, and danced her first solo in San Jose.

On returning to South Africa, Carla began teaching Belly Dance to a handful of students, and over time, the Cape Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (CAMED) was born.

The Academy currently offers classes and workshops throughout the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape, and is committed to promoting the Art and professionalism of Oriental Dance.

CAMED also boasts four Academies qualified Teachers, and two Academy qualified Professional Performers.

Ever expanding, the Academy currently has 13 students in the professional performer course, and 2 teachers in training.

The Academy offers a range of Middle Eastern dance styles, from the dances of the Turkish “Rom” to American Tribal, Ecstatic Whirling, Raqs Sharqi and Egyptian Folkloric dance.

CAMED also hosts the annual SA National Belly Dance Festival in Cape Town, which now enters its fourth year, successfully bringing together teachers, students and performers from all over Africa to share their knowledge and expertise with one another.

Carla furthered her training by traveling to Cairo in 2003 where she took private classes with Madame Farida Fahmy and Madame Aida Nour, and attended workshops at the Cairo Belly Dance Festival.

Carla has a great passion for group work, and finds much challenge and creative joy in choreographing group dance.

The Academy’s professional troupe “Ghawazee!”  Offers full theatre production sets, and aim at bringing Middle Eastern dance into the theatre genre throughout South Africa.

Carla continues her training by traveling to Cairo yearly and attending classes both privately and in a group.
